This time last month I was fortunate to leave the rainy UK behind and head to the bright skies of Valencia, with a fabulous group of ladies and the charismatic Simon Burleigh from DMC Advantage.
And what a visit we had. Upon landing we were met by the fabulous Toby Kenyon of Factor 3 Events, who whisked us into the city (a smooth 20 minutes from the airport) where he had arranged a beautifully curated programme of activities to showcase Valencia.
Day one commenced with a walking tour of the Old Town with our knowledgeable guide Chantel, who highlighted colourful neighbourhoods, iconic architecture, awe-inspiring street art and gave us glimpses into spectacular cathedrals, characterful museums and an education in creating the perfect Aqua de Valencia (of which we tried a few!)
Our home for the trip was Hotel Las Arenas Balneario Resort and the team made us feel immediately welcome with local cava, jamon & cheese on the sunny terrace. Our rooms were an oasis, with private terraces offering uninterrupted panoramic views over the beach and twinkling sea beyond. Originally a 19th century spa resort, the property has been carefully restored to preserve its architectural legacy, and a pre-dinner tour really opened everyone’s eyes to their incredible, unique meeting and event rooms. Offering over 2500 m² of event space, with big windows overlooking the sea and many with direct access to private outside areas, not to mention an all-singing auditorium which can seat up to 500 guests.
After a delicious dinner in the hotel restaurant and a restful nights sleep, day two saw us embarking on an exploration of the city by bike, really the best way to experience the variety of areas. From the historic port to the lush Turia Gardens (the city’s old riverbed), via the futuristic City of Arts & Sciences, past orange adorned trees and through hidden lanes of the Old Town. Stopping for refreshments at the Central Market gave us an opportunity to sample local produce and be envious that we didn’t live in Valencia to buy the fresh fruit, veg and fish regularly.
With all that cycling (we clocked up 14kms apparently!) we had big appetites and the food offerings did not disappoint. We experienced an exclusive private lunch at Contrapunto Restaurant which features unrivalled views across the Palau de las Arts, followed by dinner at Llisa Negra, owned by award-winning chef Quique Dacosta who has a number of Michelin stars under his belt.
And to round off our amazing day, we were very lucky to be in Valencia at the start of the Las Fallas festival, an annual Valencian celebration where fireworks are set off across the city every day. Our fireworks were an incredible display at midnight in the old town, quite an experience (and one which puts our 5th November celebrations to shame..!)
Our final day was truly magical, as we were transported by boat across the still waters of L’Albufera de Valencia national park to El Tancat Farmhouse. Here we were given a truly authentic experience of ‘field to flame’, as owner Vidal welcomed us to his family ranch and we learned the traditional art of cooking Valencian paella over an open flame, using rice from his surrounding paddy fields. The end result was one of the best paella’s I have ever eaten (we were all in agreement) and made more special by the wonderful hosts and location. Such a unique and special offsite dining option and what a way to round off the trip.
